Dmitry Magonya moderated the session titled “Different approaches to the selection of beneficiaries of pro bono and the types of assistance” at the First Russian Pro Bono Forum

The Institute of “Public Interest Law” (PILnet), with the participation and support of the Federal Chamber of Lawyers of the Russian Federation (FPA RF), organized the forum. The president of the FPA RF, Yuriy Pilipenko, the chamber’s executive vice president, Andrey Suchkov, presidents and lawyers from a number of regional chambers of lawyers, as well as representatives of the legal business, nonprofit sector, and law schools attended the event.

The president of the FPA RF, Yuriy Pilipenko, and the director of the Russian branch PILnet, Dmitry Shabelnikov, moderated the plenary session on the topic “Pro bono in Russia.”


Forum participants shared their practical experiences during their discussions of the following topics:

• Creating a successful pro bono practice and its management, even for small law firms

• Pro bono and advocacy: how the legal community can contribute to pro bono in Russia

• Pro bono and legal aid: how to ensure that they complement each other

• How to choose the beneficiaries of pro bono assistance

• Stories of success: a partnership between law firms and nonprofit organizations

• Opportunities and mutual expectations of NGOs and lawyers working on pro bono projects

• The role of pro bono legal education: legal clinics and practice-oriented courses

The participants of the session analyzed different approaches to the selection of beneficiaries and types of pro bono assistance. Dmitry Magonya, the managing partner of the ART DE LEX law firm, who also coordinates his firm’s pro bono activities, moderated the session.

Those delivering reports at the session were: Alexey Borodin, the vice president of the Chamber of Advocates of the Samara Region; Alexey Dobrynin, a partner of at the Pen & Paper law firm in St. Petersburg; Nikolay Zharov, the president of the Chamber of Advocates of the Kostroma Region; and Yuri Mahoning, a lawyer with the international firm Dechert.
