To rehearse an interrogation and chase away a boar: clients’ requests in 2022

For the reason of sanctions and restrictions, it has become more difficult to participate in court trials abroad: many foreign lawyers tend to refuse to work with Russians. Head of Litigation and International Arbitration at ART DE LEX Artur Zurabian says that the most memorable request was to find lawyers in the USA to represent the interests at American Arbitration Association (ААА) arbitration proceedings according to Californian law.

Although the client has a very remote connection with Russia and was not the subject of any sanctions, eight out of fifteen Zurabyan’s requests to foreign firms, including those recommended by colleagues, met with no response. Five more respondents refused without explaining the reason, whereas the remaining two agreed to cooperate, making a commercial offer three or four times above the market. «As a result, the AAA arbitration project went over to us», - says Head of Litigation and International Arbitration at ART DE LEX.
