Public sources do not contain any comprehensive documents on Platts' involvement in the market manipulation situation, says Marat Samarsky, an advocate of ART DE LEX International Economic Compliance Practice. Samarsky admits that through pressure on Platts, the U.S. Justice Department is trying to get some information as part of other investigations into trading in raw materials and commodities. Trying to bring the agency or its officials to some vague liability, the U.S. Justice Department can get information about the actions of much larger players, such as major banks or commodity traders, Samarsky explains. At different times the objects of increased attention of law enforcement agencies and regulators have been, and sometimes still are, such leading companies in this sector as Gunvor, Vitol, Glencore, Tower Research Capital, Merrill Lynch Commodities Inc. and JPMorgan Chase, recalls the lawyer. Dave Earnsberger, who is in charge of market and pricing insights at Platts, told Reuters that the agency would cooperate with the authorities.
