Ukraine was reminded of a Blockade

The Authorities in Crimea are getting ready to sue the Government of Ukraine once again. This time because of the «banking blockade». The estimated sum of damages that Ukriane is facing is around RUB 60 Bln, of them around a half is compensated directly from the Russian budget. The matter arose due to the Ukrianian banks failure to comply with the deposits obligations of the Crimeans.

Experts say that there are both grounds for the lawsuit and for the winning. Even though enforcement might be an issue, the sum of money gained due to the winning might be used when settling accounts with Ukraine on the alleged Russian expropriation of the Ukranian assets in Crimea.

If we talk from the legal standpoint, we see a direct breach. Banks are not allowed to expropriate deposits just because they feel like it – this are fundamentals of the civil law, its core principals. To go beyond that one would need something more than just transfer of the certain territory from one state to another – says Artur Zurabian.
