For the sake of struggle against imported gas, EU is prepared to give up the Third Energy Package

The European Union (EU) is planning to prevent renewal of log-term gas contracts and in general  put an end to such contracts after 2049. The European Commission (EC) will also offer measures to improve security of supplies in the context of high prices and persisting threat of gas deficit this winter. The relevant draft decisions will be published 15 December, reports Bloomberg with a reference to EC internal documents.

At the moment, the EU has no legal arrangements for repudiation of long-term contracts, believes Attorney of International Economic Compliance of ART DE LEX Marat Samarsky. He stressed that currently the pressure of the public economic needs is still prevailing over the idea of Pan-European  energy solidarity. «To realise such plans, EU members first have to work out the relevant energy package, a road map, and provide for allocation of resources for its implementation», – commented the lawyer. To forbid long-term gas contracts, it will be necessary to establish a coordination body and resolve the issue of warrantees of secure supplies from alternative energy sources, added Samarsky.
